Message-ID: <20030525213426.18619.qmail@web41312.mail.yahoo.com> Hello All (newbie-ish alert)! I need some help! Can anyone give me guidance on how to get a link between 2 houses, roughly 4km apart, using "normal" out of the shop gear? I'm open to spending a few quid to get a better antenna if I need on, but, I need to understand what I am buying for... Please help and thanks in advance Mark __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? The New Yahoo! Search - Faster. Easier. You might find this interesting: http://www.frars.org.uk/cgi-bin/render.pl?pageid=1066 Try a Google search for "802.11 link budget" for similar information. Line-of-sight is going to be essential. It is also worth reading up about "fresnel zones", "free space loss" and EIRP, if you haven't done so already. I'm no expert on long-range links, but I hope that this helps to get you started. -- Regards Yuri Note: Please contact me at: zYYMM@AlertIT.co.uk , where YY is the 2 digit year and MM is the 2 digit month. For that reason you are better off with a LOW output power and a HIGH gain antenna as you then have better overall range due to the higher receive gain. Note that 4Km is not a simple link to achieve. - if you search the list archive or the wiki you will find I have explained the calculations several times before. I have a fresnel zone spreadsheet available here: http://www.kyzo.com/other/fresnel.xls - if you want to put an antenna up on a pole (above the eves of your house), you will quite likely need local planning permission. Rules seem to vary, so just call your local council. malcolm c > Thanks Michael > I dont have (great) line of sight, cos warehouses > and trees and other roofs are in the way. > I was wondering, if I boost the output, would this > help?
