In a nutshell we're running a RADIUS server which allows you to define groups of people who can authenticate on your access point. A group can range from friends and family to the entire of consume. It's all managed through a web front end: http://auth.sown.org.uk/ The motivations are two fold, firstly to have a system which makes sharing your access point as safe as possible - or at least a good deal safer than it is to run it open. And secondly for it not to require that every house has a Linux box running web proxy, nocat etc etc. The whole system is quite young at the moment, however has proven to be stable over the past few months. There are is all sorts of additional functionality in the pipeline, especially with logging and helping to validate somebody's identity. So anyway, if you'd like to play with 802.1x, or you think this would be a useful thing for you wireless group please give it a try. There are lots more details on the website. Cheers, Mike Saywell SOWN - Southampton Open Wireless Network http://www.sown.org.uk
